The Program

All Year 2 students participate in a School sponsored string program where they are issued with either a violin or cello and provided with free tuition - their concerts are a joy to behold! All Year 4 students participate in a School sponsored band program where they have free group tuition on a concert band instrument: flute, clarinet or trumpet and they perform for parents at the end of their rotation. Year 7 and 8 students may choose the Specialist Music Class option where they will play in bands and ensembles further developing their musical skills. Students in Year 9 and onwards can choose pathways towards University entrance music courses studying classical or contemporary music or Vocational Education and Training (VET) music courses, gaining Certificate II, III or IV in Music or Sound Engineering.

Various band and choral ensembles rehearse before and after school and offer students from both the Primary and Secondary School opportunities to develop their skills and gain performance experience. Ensembles, choirs and bands perform at College Assemblies, concerts and at various public functions and competitions. In addition to enhancing students’ playing, ensembles provide students with a fun, collegial atmosphere where friendships develop across year groups. Primary and Secondary Inter House Eisteddfods take place annually and provide opportunity for students to support their House and develop their performance confidence.

In addition to LJBC’s music curriculum, the Private Instrumental Tuition Program enables students to participate in individual or small group tuition during the school day. Learning an instrument builds character through developing dedication, application, thoroughness and commitment. Students who elect to take private lessons are expected to participate in one of the many ensembles, choirs and bands, thus increasing their musical ability through playing with an ensemble.

Currently tuition is available for the following instruments:
Brass – trumpet; trombone; euphonium; tuba
Guitar – electric guitar; bass guitar; classical/acoustic guitar
Strings – violin; cello; viola
Woodwind – piccolo; flute; clarinet; bass clarinet; alto saxophone; tenor saxophone; baritone saxophone
